Working with Type

Published

I have just designed the cover for my upcoming book Working with Type, which will be out from RIT Press sometime later this year. The subtitle describes it well: “Selected essays on type & typography.” They’re chosen out of material I’ve written in the last twenty-odd years, ranging from articles about Microsoft Typography and Deberny et Peignot to historical essays on the backgrounds of various Adobe Originals typefaces. Not to mention appreciations of various typographers and type designers, and even my little April Fool’s squib about the discovery of the Roman Empire’s Pantone system.

I’ve also been working hard on getting the ATypI history finished. I committed to having it available in digital form by this year’s first conference, at Stanford at the end of May, though this may be only Version 1.0; I can imagine getting additions, corrections, and useful comments that I could incorporate into a second edition later. Which might be printed: but that would require further funding. First things first.

At the Stanford conference, I’ll be giving a talk about the ATypI history project. This time, it won’t be about a work still in progress!
