    Thanks, John. At the time I started to draw Iowan Old Style, using pencil on paper, the book weight was my primary concern. I wanted to produce a body face that could be read without exhaustive effort, page after page, in a seamless continuum. The heavier weights were done with an eye toward signage, as opposed to print. [Iowan Old Style] “looks and reads like a highly accomplished piece of work,” wrote Matthew Carter in a personal letter to me after he first saw paste-ups of the roman and italic at text sizes. Apple apparently sought the same qualities, so I’m happy about their request to license Iowan for iBooks.
