The oddest thing to come out of that day’s meeting was my realization that the standard production flow for creating e-books is to convert from a PDF to ePub. This makes sense for a publisher’s backlist, when the books already exist as printed objects and maybe the only truly final digital file available is a PDF. But it seems like an awkward digression for creating a new book: the PDF should be one output (for print), while any e-book should be a separate output from the same final digital file. Strange to realize that there’s a whole industry right now built around converting from a format that has already lost a lot of its useful information.
